Many of you probably don’t know…but I’m going through a new adventure this spring semester at SHSU. I am an R.A. (a.k.a. Resident Assistant) at one of the many dorms on campus. Let me tell you, it’s only been three weeks, and it’s a totally new challenge. I’m actually writing this because of a new perspective I now have on living on a college campus and getting along with other people. Most kids go off to college thinking that they’re going to meet a few people, establish their new click, and go on as if they were in high school all over again. Let me tell you, it couldn’t be any farther from the truth. For those of us lucky enough to experience “on campus” life, it can be the bases of many of the life skills that we need to be successful in this day and age.
In America’s work places people have to get along and establish good work relationships every single day. Now, this isn’t such an easy task. Learning to get along with people that can be totally and utterly different from you can at times be frustrating and annoying…but we all have to do it. Now imagine the most annoying person you have ever met, now imagine living with them for at least a school semester. Yeah, sounds like pure torture doesn’t it? Well, this is pretty much what living in a dorm can be like. There is always one person that you absolutely can’t stand, but there’s really nothing you can do about it. But, you can either think of these circumstances as an opportunity or as a hindrance. I like to think of it as the first choice, a wonderful opportunity.
I’m pretty sure you can ask your parents, relatives, or friends about their work and they will always say there’s at least one person who they absolutely cannot stand. Well tough luck, you still have to work with them. Living in a dorm is great experience for learning how to get along with people that are so totally different.
In my experience, I wouldn’t change my circumstances for the world. I know so many girls in my dorm that are exact polar opposites of me, but each and every single one of them are awesome in their own way. Yes, there are always a few people that annoy you or you really would like to avoid at times, but you can still learn so much of them. So, next time you complain about that person at work or that person next to you in the dorm, remember that they are just another interesting person you’re going to meet on this long road we call life. If you can’t be friends, then try to at least tolerate each other, because no matter what you do or where you go, you’re always going to encounter the same thing. If you don’t learn now, then how do expect to learn later on?
And if any of the Parkhill Piranhas or Elliott Elite read this, y’all are truly awesome! ;-)

I just learned something totally new and fascinating, so I would like to hear some feed back on this one and any theories that any of you might have. I’m going to explain it to the best of my ability…we’ll see how this goes…
In my last history class, on Friday, my teacher introduced our class to Pirenne’s Thesis. For more information take a look at Wikipedia and feel free to do more research on the subject…but the idea of it is that, what we once believed about the spread of Christianity and the Roman Empire is totally different from what historical facts show. Take note that this is not a proved theory, but it is still very interesting.
You see, the Roman Empire was a Mediterranean society. During the Empire North Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Europe where integrated. It was in no way a total European society like we make it out to be today. Pirenne stated that it was not Europe who was Christian; it was actually North Africa and the Near East who flourished in Christianity during the “dark ages.” These other parts of the world were also more prosperous than Europe. Perinne’s ideas would account for the reasons why the capital of Rome was moved and it is also backed up by the fact that these parts of the world were also more economically successful than Europe.

Truthfully, Europe was a society of disorganized barbarians. Pirenne believed that the Romans mostly pulled out of Europe heading to the more civilized parts of the world after the fall of the Roman Empire. With the remnants of the Empire, Christianity also pulled out. Europe actually wasn’t a society based on Christianity like we make it out to be. It wasn’t until Islam developed and started conquering North Africa and the Near East, that Christians once again became interested in Europe. Monasteries and churches in this time where actually built to ward off attacks because of all the barbarians that would ransack them. Architecture was very different during this time period compared to the Grand Chapels we think of in Europe today. Charlemagne arose as the great Christian leader, and tried to convert and attract the barbarians. By the 10th and 11th centuries, Christianity finally claimed a foot-hold on the European Continent. The revival of the Middle Ages began.
One of the faults in this thesis though, is that Pirenne claimed that the Muslim society had no contact with the Christian Society in Europe during the Middle ages. This has actually recently been proven false. Christians actually bartered and traded with the richer and more economically successful Muslims. Europeans traded barbarian slaves for the wares of Africa and the Middle East.
So…isn’t it a totally fascinating theory…if proven this could be a very significant discovery in Christian History. I’d like to hear your thought on this subject, so feel free to leave comments. Do you think Pirenne’s crazy…or does he draw out some good points?

Well…It’s back to college again…and hopefully this time around I’ll be able to stay more up to date on here. I actually have about three posts in the works, but I’ve yet to proofread and finish them…so look out in the near future, they should be up soon.
I’m returning to college tomorrow, the 8th of January, and I’m probably going to have quite a bit of time to do such things as write some posts before school officially starts. This semester of school is going to be my first time as an R.A. at college, which I’m bound to have tons of stories and life lessons to update y’all on, so keep reading, and stay tuned!!!
