St. Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

Giving to the poor.  Praying.  Fasting.

Who wants to do that?  Lots of people do.  But for the wrong reasons.  For example:

Did you see how much I gave to the poor?  I want my hefty donation publicized.  An article in the World Herald.  With my picture.  Front and center.  And then I want a public thank you for my generosity.  Contact Congressman Osborne’s office.  He should know about me.  What would the poor do without me?

Watch me pray.  Aren’t you impressed?  You should all learn to pray like me.  Intense.  Arms outstretched. Eyelids tightly closed.  Face contorted.  And the words.  Can you keep up?  What would you do without me praying?

Have you noticed my appearance?  See anything different about me?  I’m somber.  My face is gaunt.  Thin.  I’ve really lost weight.  Why is that you ask?  I’m fasting.  No cheeseburgers.  No French fries.  No chocolate.  Just water.  I’ve been going without food for days.  Isn’t that impressive?

Aren’t you astounded?  Amazed at my donations?  Electrified by my praying?  Astounded by my fasting?  I’m a super spiritual stud.

Imagine how impressed the Lord is!  I’ll bet He’s tickled pink that I donate so much to the poor, offer my prayers
religiously and go without three meals a day.  The Lord has to just love guys like me.  Can you imagine the rewards I’ll get from the Lord for all my “acts of righteousness?”  If I keep up this giving, praying and fasting, especially during Lent, he’ll have to reward me.  The reward for heaven for sure.  I’m so darn good.

And the Lord says:  “Knock it off!  I’m not impressed.  In fact, I’m extremely disappointed.  Give, pray and fast all you want.  But it doesn’t earn you heaven.  Heaven is a gift.  From me.  Because I’ve died for you.  Because I’ve answered for all your sin.  Because you’re baptized.  Because you’re Lord Supper-ed.  Salvation isn’t earned.  It’s given.  In ME.  My death.  Trust that.  It’s a sure thing.”

“Give to the poor.  Sure.  Absolutely.  Generously.  Not to impress me or anyone else.  Not to earn my Father’s favor.  Don’t give to the poor to enhance your status.  That’s using the poor for your own benefit.  But simply because the poor needs help.  You can even give anonymously.  No one needs to know.  Your left hand doesn’t need to know what your right hand is giving.”

Pray.  Yes, by all means pray.  Go into your room.  Shut the door.  My Father knows what you need.  Trust Him.  He loves to give.  Freely.  Bigheartedly.

Fasting.  Go ahead.  Wash your face.  Comb your hair.  No need to put on a big show.  No one needs to know.  Why should they?  Unless, of course, you’re trying to be someone you’re really not.”

“You want a reward for all your giving, praying and fasting?  I’ll tell you what it is.  It’s simple.  You get to be my Father’s hands, feet and mouth for your neighbor who needs your love.  Because you’re died for, you’re free to live for others.  To give to the needy FOR THEIR BENEFIT.  To pray for those who need your prayers.  To fast not for yourself but to give the food and money you save for those who need it the most.”

“You’re not #1.  Your neighbor is.  Want to give us something for Lent?  Give up on living only for yourself and trust in my death all the more for you.  You’ll begin to live your life for others.  There’s great joy in faith toward Me and fervent love for the needy.  That’s a lovely reward.”

Have a happy Ash Wednesday.
