Bloghardt's Reflector

“If now I seek the forgiveness of sins, I do not run to the cross, for I will not find it given there… But I will find in the sacrament or Gospel the word which distributes, presents, offers, and gives to me that forgiveness which was won on the Cross.” (AE 40, 214)

More Information on Relief Efforts...

Posted At: 3:19am by Bloghardt

It's really humbling how many emails we have received asking to give assistance to the pastors, teachers, and laity in the New Orleans area.  The outpouring was very touching.

Pastor Anderson was on Issues' Etc yesterday talking about what's going on in Louisiana.  It was filled with such wonderful Gospel.  Listen here

In this time where we are tempted to be concerned only with watching television or the news, it is a time to repent of our sins and plead to God for mercy.  Pastors are given to be doing the Liturgy, pray, preach the Gospel, and administer the Sacrament and for parishioners to be receiving gifts from God.  If one of the members of these congregations is attending your church, please email Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, so that the pastors can know where their sheep are.  You have no idea what joy it is for these shepherds to know that their sheep are safe.

Those of you trying to contact the list of pastors from yesterday's Reflector post, be patient.  The lines to Louisiana are seriously overloaded.  Your best chance is to use an analog phone. Even, then you will have some network filled errors.  My suggestion is that you email Pastor Anderson.  His church had their electricity restored and he will get your message.  You can also email me and I will pass the message on to the brothers.

What else can you do?  As I said yesterday, you can give to your district and to LCMS World Relief and Human Care.  Good Shepherd is not intending to replace these, but to supplement them by getting resources into the hands of the pastors, teachers, and laity of Lutheran congregations of the Southern District effected by Hurricane Katrina.  While their contact is closest with the New Orleans area, they are working to aid all congregations affected by this hurricane.  To my great joy, I hear that  all donations (100%) collected will be used for this purpose.

Please make your donations payable to:

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
5990 Perkins Rd
Baton Rouge, LA  70808-4113
(225)766-4610

So that they get into the hands of those in need, please note that they are for "Hurricane Relief."  For a bulletin insert with this information click here.

I was also asked to pass this along:  The Confessional Lutheran Education Foundation will be also collecting funds, 100% of which will be used for Confessional Lutheran laity and church workers affected by the Hurricane Katrina in the Southern District.  I believe their efforts are centered around Salem in Gretna, LA.  It is thought that this congregation will be the first operation in New Orleans, since it is on high ground and will be one of the first to have power restored.

Please make your donations to:

Confessional Lutheran Educational Foundation
P.O. Box 43844
Minneapolis, MN 55443

So that these check reach those in need, please label them for "Hurricane Katrina."

These groups are to supplement the other groups involved in our Synod who are sending aid to the people harmed by this hurricane.  These two groups are using ALL (100%) of the money donated to them for the professional church workers and laity effected by this hurricane.

Re: More Information on Relief Efforts...

What is this crap about giving only to "confessional Lutherans" impacted by the hurricane?

Re: More Information on Relief Efforts...

Who said anything about giving ONLY to "confessional Lutherans"?

The Southern District is very liberal as far as districts go and confessional congregations have been a burr in its side for a long time. If you read the information, these donations would go directly to people who they know are in need of it and any others they hear about too as time goes on.

They want to do what they can for their friends. Confessional pastors and congregations in districts have had to band together to take care of their own in the past. What's the big deal about doing so now too?

Re: More Information on Relief Efforts...

This is a long-term problem... cash donations are excellent short-term solutions. Some of us have limited income and cannot do all that much in donations.

How can we help find homes and jobs for our brothers and sisters in Christ? Can we take some of these people into our homes? Can we at least help screen people so that THEY can take people in?

Even if that is what HAD been said (and that IS NOT what was said), I do not understand why you have a problem with that.

People in a historical re-creation group called the SCA have had people helping the other SCA members in the affected regions. PeTCO and petsmart have been helping with displaced pets. People are doing what they can, even if the first hands they think to help reflect something they care about.

We can NOT do everything... but we can do something. Even if we can only help a single family with similar interests or needs or what ever... we are getting them out of the temporary situation-- like living in the Astrodome.

Defensor,

Thank you for your comment.

The intent was initially to help the families and congregations of these pastors in New Orleans. We've received such an outpouring of email and support that we wanted to look outside New Orleans, if possible.

The intent is not to work against existing organization and their fundraising, but to make sure that those pastors and congregations are tended to who need help.

Not in a political sense, but in that these brothers suffer so much for confessing the faith, that we want to help them in this time of need.

Re: More Information on Relief Efforts...

This thread demonstrates the hubris and stupidity of the Higher Things crowd. Have you people ever heard of LCMS World Relief? You should be urging people to send money to LCMS World Relief. They are in a much better position than you are to get help to the people who need it and are working with the Southern District to identify all LCMS pastors and congregations who need help. Geesh, pathetic!

"Daring to be Lutheran," Defensor, is daring to do more. That's the "always more of faith."

Lutheran World Relief and Human Care is a gift from God. I'm all for it. In fact, my posting said to give to it. Then, also, send aid directly to Good Shepherd to help those who need it too. In fact, every penny that you send will go directly to those in need...

Re: More Information on Relief Efforts...

I gave to the Red Cross. I gave to the LCMS World Relief. I will also give to targeted groups whose interests coincide with mine, such as the Civil War Preservation Trust, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Humane Society.

There should be no shame and no condemnation for those who prefer to give directly to specific groups of people or organizations, whether they be 'confessional' churches or the church at large. BTW...since when has a confessional adherence to doctrine become a thing to be ashamed of?

Respectfully, Defensor, who are you to decry and deride those who may desire to contribute to "Confessional" Churches? Let the money flow to where the contributor desires, should he/she desire to target funds. You can give to reductionist/synergistic congregations if you desire.

I wanted to target my Red Cross donation to Mississippi relief, but ultimately decided to let the RC allocate my donation. Either way, targeted or no, funds will get to those in need.

Re: More Information on Relief Efforts...

To politicize this is utterly shameful and reprehensible. As for me and my congregation, we will give to LCMS World Relief, a fine organization that delivers maximum dollar per dollar donated; we will give to pastors and congregations whose plight we personally become aware of; and we will adopt as many families as we can.

Thank you, Pastor Cwirla.

Indeed and no politicizes was intended.

My congregation is giving to LCMS World Relief, to these pastors and congregations who are in need, and to support the refugees and displaced who have moved into our own town.
