Pastor Cwirla gives me a call today to check to see if I am still alive. Our boys have been passing a stomach bug back and forth - then to Sophia and their parents. I'm sick, Pastor Cwirla, but I'm still alive.
Nevertheless, it seems that Bloghardt has been away from blogging too long... (smile) Dan over at Necessary Roughness swung by the church the other day for midweek service and even commented on it!
So, I walked by the television earlier this week and my honey was watching Barbara Walters. Walters was going on and on about her top ten people of the year and Amy loves top-ten lists. Now, you don't have to do much to be on Walter's top-ten list -- like that guy whose claim to fame is evidently that he said that “Bush hates” some people in New Orleans. I guess that's news. (smile)
Then, Walters closes her show by stating she's gonna do a show on a very Holiday Season note. She says, “We are gonna do a special on heaven titled: 'Heaven: Where is it? How do you get there?”
My honey says to herself, “Heaven: you can find it on channel 13.” That's Amy's way. She makes jokes. I'm the serious Bloghardt (smile).
The sad thing about the Walters' upcoming special is the absolute surest way to NOT go to heaven is to TRY to get to heaven. How do we get there? We don't by our figuring out how to get there. What WE do earns for us nothing but hell.
Heaven? Where is it? Where Jesus is! Then... comes one of those great Luther quotes from Dr. Nagel, “God is indeed everywhere, but is He everywhere for you?”
Jesus is where He puts Himself for you – in the Word, Holy Baptism, in His Body and Blood given for you to eat and drink for the remission of sins.
So, where is heaven? Heaven is at the receiving point of Jesus' gifts. Heaven is in the waters of your baptism. Heaven is in the Word put into your ears. Heaven is in Holy Communion.
What's better is that you don't “go” to heaven, Heaven comes to you in Christ's gifts. Jesus comes to us! Now that's Advent!
More on this when I post this Sunday's sermon....
BTW.. what do you think it says when the guy in the clerical is next to her and the Buddhist monk? Anything? Nothing? What do you think?
