Iowa City Tornado

Posted At: 3:05pm by Rev. Marcus T. Zill
Dear everyone,

Last night after many of us concluded our Maundy Thursday services, a F2 tornado cut a 3½-mile long, one-third of a mile wide swath of destruction through the heart of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa. I received the below note from Rev. Max Mons, who is our LCMS campus pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Chapel in Iowa City. It sounds like it was a close call.

You can learn more at: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,191806,00.html

I would like to encourage you and your congregations to include a prayer this weekend during the remainder of your services for Pastor Mons, his family, his students, and the greater University of Iowa community.

I'm sure that they will have many opportunities to minister to those in need in the days and weeks ahead, and that they covet our prayers at this time. Please continue to keep this faithful LCMS campus ministry and Christ on Campus Chapter, her pastor, and those in their community in your prayers in the coming days.

Here is a petition that you might be able to use, or alter for your purposes, perhaps for this Sunday, or if there is time yet today, for conclusion in the Bidding Prayer on Good Friday:

Almighty God, merciful Father, Your thoughts are not our thoughts, Your ways are not our ways. In Your wisdom, You have permitted this disastrous tornado to befall many in Iowa and especially in and around the University of Iowa in Iowa City. We implore You, let not the hearts of Your people despair nor their faith fail them, but sustain and comfort them. Direct all efforts to attend the injured, console the bereaved, and protect those who have suffered great loss, through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Modified from the prayer at a "Time of Disaster" from Lutheran Service Book)

If used as a petition in the Bidding Prayer, a suitable petition might be:

Let us pray for all those in time of need due to any calamity or natural disaster, whether fire, earthquake, hurricane or tornado, including those in, and around the University of Iowa, that all might be comforted physically and spiritually in their time of need and distress:

Indeed, let us all join together in giving praise and thanks to God for His great mercy and for the fact that this was not much worse.

In Christ,
Pastor Zill

P.S. Here was Pastor Mons note to myself and a few other campus ministry folk on our Confessional Lutheran Campus Ministry e-list. It is forwarded with his permission.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you no doubt have heard, last night, April 13, Iowa City experienced several tornadoes. I am happy to report that the tornadoes missed our chapel and my home, but not by much.

If you travel four blocks south of our chapel you will find overturned cars, a church with its roof peeled off, and a demolished pizza place. One of the sorority houses was also destroyed.

If you travel 1/4 - 1/2 mile from my home you'll find a heavily damaged Menard's and Walmart as well as several car dealerships that are now in pieces.

I road the storm out in the basement of our chapel. My wife and children were home at the time.

The news reported that 21 people were hospitalized. Thus far, there are no fatalities. As far as I know all of our students and members are fine.

Here is a link to our local paper if you desire to know more. http://www.press-citizen.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

Blessed be God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit for love and mercy.

Peace,

Rev. W. Max Mons, S.T.M.

Re: Iowa City Tornado

Thanks Be to God that you, your parishioners, and chapel are all safe. One of my best friends missed the Tornado by 2 blocks as well. God's Blessings as you continue your ministry and also provide for the needs of those around you.
