Catechesis (religious instruction) at Higher Things conferences is known for being fairly intense - come prepared to learn! Many people today don’t think youth are capable of learning about doctrinal issues, or that they’re even interested in doing so. We have found just the opposite to be true! At our conferences, youth have many, many opportunities to learn more about their faith and its uniqueness in the Christian world. Sectional workshops are offered on a variety of subjects of interest to young people to help them understand and express a faithful perspective when talking to their friends, teachers, and families. Catechetical speakers at Higher Things conferences are pastors or laity in the LCMS.

Sectional topics and teachers will be announced later this spring. These teachers are selected largely from the pool of pastors and other qualified laity registered for each conference, so we have to wait until Registration closes to see who those eligible teachers are!

Plenary Speakers:

At Amen in St. Louis, the Poconos and Irvine The Rev. George F. Borghardt III and The Rev. Mark Buetow will be teaching on the conference theme.

The Rev. George F. Borghardt III is the Assistant/Youth Pastor at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Conroe, TX. He graduated Louisiana State University with a degree in Classics and took five years to do it so that he could graduate from the Concordia Seminary with Pastor Buetow. He hates clowns, loves the Mets. Pr. Borghardt is rumored to never sleep and to be powered by Diet Coke. He has taught and preached at many Higher Things retreats and conferences as well as at other events around Texas and the United States. Pr. Borghardt and Amy, his wife of eleven years, have three children: George, Thomas, and Sophia.

The Rev. Mark T. Buetow, S.T.M. received his Master of Divinity in 1998 but stayed at the seminary to get his Masters of Sacred Theology because he didn't want to graduate until Pastor Borghardt did in 2000. He served Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in New Orleans for 5 1/2 years until Hurricane Katrina huffed and puffed and blew him up to Kentucky. After a brief stint as a mediocre TV salesman, Pastor Buetow was called to Bethel Lutheran Church in Du Quoin, Illinois. (Du Quoin is in the part of Illinois that is not Chicago). He has been serving there since December of 2006. Pastor Buetow has been married to Susan for 13 years and they have three children, twins Naomi and Anna and Emily. In his free time, Pastor Buetow enjoys playing strategy and boardgames you've never heard of as well as fiddling with computer operating systems you've never heard of.

Higher Things Conferences feature three types of opportunities to study the Scriptures, two of these are our sectionals. Each conference features breakaway sessions and in depth sessions. Breakaway sessions each meet once during the conference and cover a variety of topics. Typically you'll get to attend more then one breakaway session during the conference. In depth sessions will meet three times during the conference and take a deeper look into a particular topic. Each conference this summer has a unique list of sectional teacher's and topics. They are listed below for you and will also be available in the conference book when you arrive.
