The Great Debate

Posted At: 6:44pm by FemLem1
Ok, here's how it goes:

On the bus the other night on the way back from DtBL, we stop at a gas station to use the facilities. Now I assume many of you now how this is: one toilet for the girls and one for the guys. So here I am waiting in line for my turn and got into a discussion about the Harry Potter stories/movies/etc. (for that had been the movie we had just started on the bus). Now if you have read any of my previous entries, you know that i am most definitely a fan - perhaps a bit fanatic even. The other person in the discussion told me essentially she didn't think kids should read the books because of the magic. I, obviously, don't agree: I think it is a parenting issue to teach kids that magic isn't real and that the story is fictional.

What do you people out there think?

P.S. - Finished the book today (FINALLY!) Cried a little and I was right about one of the big secrets, but I'm not going to spoil it and tell you :D

Re: The Great Debate

How does the second commandment come in to play with Harry Potter?

Is that legalism?

Can you read/watch movies about magic and not use/practice magic?

Is a movie/book just a movie/book?

Re: The Great Debate

One thing I've noticed about some Christians is, if they don't find God in something, they hate it. Yes, we should live THROUGH Christ (not for) but not everything is meant to be scripturally theological. Some things are just for pure entertainment. I've been a fan of HP for longer than the Fem-Lems, (in fact, I introduced HP to FL1!!!) and I have never tried to curse somebody who made me mad... however, i did try (like every other boy [and some girls] in the country) to be a superhero when I was little. Does that mean that we should count Superman as evil? No, at least for that reason, it is strictly for entertainment purposes, not theological.

Re: The Great Debate

Even if Harry Potter makes you want to do magic, much in the way that Star Wars makes me want to shoot lightning from my hands, you can't do that magic they do. It is fantasy magic. It doesn't exist in the real world. No one is casting spells and making people's toe-nails grow really long, or dangle from their ankles on the ceiling. If someone thinks that THIS is a gateway to the occult -- then they either don't know Harry Potter, or they don't know anything about the occult. Anyone who wants to "be like Harry Potter," and looks into the occult to find it, will be dreadfully disappointed. If anything -- it turns people away from the occult.

Re: The Great Debate

i have about 200 more pages or so...anywho, the school i used to go to, it was basically seen as evil etc.so i never read them till about a year ago (my grandmother had bought all of them) its just fiction. its the same idea with video games, the games dont make you go out and kill people, just as harry potter doesnt make you render someone under your command...although it would be fun...(not like that)
