The Excorcism of Emily Rose *cough, cough*

Posted At: 8:55pm by Darth Patty
Well Ive been itching to see this movie for quite some time now... and I got my wish, with non-other than the Femlems, The boxing Mop, and Bloghardt himself. If you go into the movie, without being religious, a horror fanatic, or disliking the good courtroom drama, you're out of luck. I happen to be all three of these but oh well, what can you do? I actually enjoyed this movie, before we got outside and actually discussed how ridiculous some of it actually was. Just for starters, Femlem2 gets freaked out really easily... and I think I do too. Of course every movie has its positives and negatives, but being Pre-sem, (and well pre-college too but oh well)... some of 'em just stick out like a sore thumb. Ok first ill talk about the positives and go from there... Moppy will fill in whatever I left out and what not.

****SPOILER ALERT READ AT OWN RISK***

Well here we go. The positives of this movie don't really rest in the story what so ever, minus a few. The directing and production were very high quality. The special effects were brilliant, as was the musical composition. The use of the "actual recordings" was freaky in itself and I really enjoyed it... even if the whole thing was just a selling point for the movie. Also they actually said something to the effect of salvation through faith alone (Moppy correct me if I'm wrong). The scenes that I really enjoyed in the movie were the flash backs. Although the bad theology was centered in these, they rocked! The exorcism I found to be genially scary in it. The naming of the demons was quite dramatic.

Now for the negatives...just about all of the theology mentioned is questionable and very Roman. The use of 3 a.m. in the movie (the supposed demonic witching hour, used to mock the hour of the trinity 3 p.m.) is something I have never heard of and neither had Bloghardt I believe. Some how they infused Stigmata (being blessed with the sufferings of Christ) into demonic possession, even Bloghardt saw this come totally out of left field... unless he's holding out on me *gives Bloghardt a suspicious look* Anyhow toward the end of the movie during the last flashback scene a letter is read that tells of her speaking with "the Mother of God" the virgin Mary...now at hearing this and many other comments during the movie, the oober Lutherans two rows from the back go "OH NO WAY?!?!?!?" but yeah.. So basically if you're a Lutheran.. This isn't the movie for you.. other then that I'd recommend it to raise some questions in your mind. I know I still have some I have yet to ask.

****END SPOILER ALERT*** Well I'm darthpatty, the padawan of Femlem1. I'm basically here to be humorous, and post random things. After being denied access on The Boxing Mop, I begged femlem1 to allow me on. After basically being at her heels for a whole night here I am....YAY FOR ME!!!

Re: The Excorcism of Emily Rose *cough, cough*

Patty... Very good point. Theologically, it was very Roman, but that was expected. Cinematically, it was very well done. ***SPOILER***I like the way that they use the demons that were "within" the major bad spots in the Bible ( namely Cain and Judas),a generally bad person in Roman History (Nero), the only two named in the Bible (Legion and Lucifer), and another one that even I didn't recognize(Bilel).***END SPOILER*** Over all, it was a pretty good movie, very well put together.

Re: The Excorcism of Emily Rose *cough, cough*

I think that i definitely have to say that that movie did cause me some mental damage. It was not at all scarey, but the disturbance factor of some of the sceens and images... yeah.

Im just not entirely sure what to think about that movie other than it had HORRIBLE theology.

Re: The Excorcism of Emily Rose *cough, cough*

One of the things I hated about the "Exorcist" -not to be confused with the present film- was how all the preachers were killed by the devil at the end, making it look like God was almost a work of fiction.

Just once, I'm waiting for an exorcism movie were the devils are all sent fleeing away by the power of God, and the good guys don't get turned into tomato paste.

I don't know if that's an indication of a theology of glory or not...but I would like to see that kind of a movie for a change.

Re: The Excorcism of Emily Rose *cough, cough*

Ah, true. maybe today then demons always prevail due to the "bad guy wins factor" were just not amused anymore by watching superman save the day.. lex luthor has to win too. The question of why this is going to take place in religious movies.. well better yet movies based on a religous subject is beyond me.

p.s. didnt a preacher survive at the end of the first exorcist?
