EVERYONE is freaking out over the hurricanes - first Katrina, now Rita. My family lives north of Houston, I'm a bit concerned. But I'm trying, trying, not to worry. Baptizatus Sum. I know. But the prospect of my family and friends potentially having to withstand a hurricane is still a bit unnerving.
What to do? Go home and stay with them? That's not wise, plus all inbound traffic routs are being turned into outbound trying to get people out. Watch the news? Bad idea - it only propetuates worry. Throw a hurricane party? Thought about it, but was told I was sick, so no party.
What then? How do I deal with the worries that fester in my mind? There is the Gospel. That's the first thing. I've been told it, I've told people it, Padre reflected on (as i'm sure many others have spoken about it too). But personally, When i need comfort, I read hymns. That's right, I said it. TLH and LW are my friends. You find the Words of God there, and I don't know why, but the hymns calm me. Reading the words I have sang since before I could read bring peace to my otherise troubled heart. So allow me to give you my soundtrack that I find helpful in all sorts of trying times:
- A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
- God's Own Child I Gladly Say It
- Go, My Children, With My Blessing
- By Grace I'm Saved, Grace Free and Boundless
- I am Jesus Little Lamb
- Chief of Sinners Though I Be
- Abide With Me
- All Christians Who Have Been Baptized
- Salvation Unto Us Has Come
- Jesus Loves Me
- I Know That My Redeemer Lives
- Songs of Thankfulness and Praise
- Thy Strong Word
They aren't all "comfort" songs, they're just the hymns I like, that make me feel better. Feel free to add your own!
