Being from Conroe,. which is just north of Houston, Hurricane Rita has me a bit freaked out, to say the least. Being here at college is not helping because I know that as Rita hits land, contact with those that are still there, is going to be difficult if not just downright impossible. My mom emailed me, and told me that there is no gas anywhere in town, and another friend said the same thing. The grocery stores have next to nothing on the shelves. And at my own expense, I found that watching CNN, MSNBC, FOX, is NOT a good idea. That just makes my worries accumulate.
So now, I'm in search of things to keep me calm while it seems that the heavens are letting loose at home. After seeing Femlem1's post on the hymns. i realized that when I am living in my unbelief and not thinking about how much our heavenly Father loves us, cares for us and provides for us, I do have something to calm me in trouble and despair. Of course, I conveniently have copies of THL and LW which are usually right next to me, but when i am fretting over things that i shouldn't, I pick up my Bible and turn to the Psalms.
At this point, there are several Psalms that i can think of that are wonderful to read right now, while i am letting my burdens get the best of me.
Psalm 27The LORD is my light and salvation - whom shall i fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid? When evil men advance against meto devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.Though an army besiege, my heart will not fear;though war break out against meeven then will I be confident. One thing that i ask of the LORD,this is what I seek that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.to gaze upon the beauty of the LORDand to seek him in his temple. For in the day of troublehe will keep me safe in his dwelling;he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacleand set me high upon a rock.
When my unbelief gets the best of me, and I'm not thinking baptizatus sum, or that our Father is looking out for us, and He's not taking the day off when Rita slams into the Texas coast, i look at the above Psalm that i have taped to my computer and just continue to pray for all those stuck at home.
So now after my search of Psalms, I figured that i could come up with my own list, to help comfort and calm me. Here are a few more Psalms that I found and thought would be good to throw up here. If you have more, feel welcome to add them.
- Psalm 4
- Psalm 5
- Psalm 11
- Psalm 23
- Psalm 51
- Psalm 86
- Psalm 120
- Psalm 145

VERY GOOD. VERY GOOD, indeed.
(It's quiet here before the storm)
