Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Posted At: 9:27am by Sandra Ostapowich
Up here we call it "Minnesota Nice". You just don't make a big fuss and upset people unnecessarily. If you and your neighbors are just fine with a low shrubbery between your yards, then why in the world would you want to upset the status quo by installing a 10- to 12-foot high black metal picket fence between your homes with another chain-link fence about 20 feet inside your neighbor's yard, rigged with alarms and motion detectors.

Maybe if your neighbors were 79 murderers, 15 robbers, eight burglars and five arsonists...

This group of neighbors oppose a plan to put a security fence around the state prison for women in this outlying Minneapolis suburb. They say it will ruin their views and send a message of fear.

"It'll change the whole perception of people who come through," Dave Hart said. "They might as well put up a sign, 'Welcome to Stalag 13."

Well by golly, we wouldn't want to ruin anyone's view of THE PRISON or send a message of fear about the violent grrl-criminals incarcerated there...
