Inadvertent and Occasionally Intentional Thoughts

Former Contender for the World's First Female Lutheran Pope??

Posted On: April 06th, 2005 at 11:32 pm

Over on the Higher Things forums, I've been asked to explain myself ;)

You know those tests school counselors make you take from time to time that supposedly help guide you into different careers?  EVERY single one I took, I got "Priest", "Rabbi", "Nun", "Pastor".  Once I got "Circus Performer" :)  So I guess my interest in ministry to youth is not entirely inappropriate!  However, I went to a church where women did things like serve on the Board of Directors (which replaced the Elders), serve communion (usually just the Chalice but I'm pretty sure they did the Host too), read lessons (including the Gospel), serve as Worship Director (selecting the music for the contemporary service), etc.  I was personally encouraged to become a pastor from confirmation onward.  Anyone who believed women should not do those things, I was taught, was an unenlightened, woman-hating moron and it was just a matter of time until I could preach in my home church.

But becoming a nun always had its appeal, unfortunately Lutherans didn't have nuns (I didn't know about deaconesses then).  Why stop there though?  I mean, if I was going to jump into the ministry and be a nun, why NOT ride the wave all the way to the top and be pope?

In college (Valparaiso University) where I was a pre-Sem Theology major, it was typical for profs in more laid-back classes to ask us to introduce ourselves and share what are career goals were.  Always the shy and demure flower of a gal I am, when it got to be my turn, I proudly stated that I planned to become the First Female Lutheran Pope.  Everyone laughed, of course.

This prof was also the Dean of the Chapel at the time, and in the sermon on the final Sunday of the school year, with all the parents in town for graduation that afternoon, he was talking about all the wonderful futures students there had ahead of them...engineers, teachers, nurses, pastors, even the World's First Female Lutheran Pope!

Of course then I had to run into this guy who told me the Gospel and taught me what great creatures God made when He invented woman and everything changed.

Sandra,

Your sense of humor is just fantastic. Having been witness to your posts on the Yahoo groups and Lutherquest and now here I can continue to read your tongue in cheek humor more often. As a fellow Twin Citian I am sure that your humor is also a by-product of growing up here. Please continue to bless us with your wisdom and humor each and every day.

Dear Executive Dir. of LiGW,

I like to say you are a breath of fresh air in this world of false doctrine. I know you to be a great example of what being Lutheran is all about, a inspiration to the young Ladies that are fed the garabage of the devils world day in and day out. Your life of becoming the first women pope, then turning from that with the Holy Spirit Guiding you to the pure Gospel through His means is a lesson for us all.
But what I don't understand is how you are going to keep up with all the young Pastors, Vicors, and men. that are and will, come calling!!!!! Being you are what a man hopes to require in a wife.
Please let me know how you are taking care of this. also let us come up with some ideas to help.
Also You really think the a Pope Hat would have gone with your scarf?

*Madre gets out some hip waders and a BIG SHOVEL*

Thank you for the thoughtful words, Coco.

And I think the little pope hat would go with my scarf just fine. The big pope hat...well that's GOT to give a person bad hair.

And gotta give Coco some points there. That took nerve to post that on here. Blogger Smiley Granted there was some truth in that.

Let's see...let's throw Part Time a bone and answer his questions...

"But what I don't understand is how you are going to keep up with all the young Pastors, Vicors, and men. that are and will, come calling!!!!!"

I'll be getting some of those little colums with velvet ropes and the line will form to the left...

"Being you are what a man hopes to require in a wife."

That remains debatable. Some men don't want such things.

"Please let me know how you are taking care of this. also let us come up with some ideas to help."

Besides the velvet ropes and handing out numbers, I suppose I could park my dad out on the porch in his underwear with a shotgun and a big rabid looking dawg...any other ideas?

"Also You really think the a Pope Hat would have gone with your scarf?"

Once I was done redesigning it, you betcha!
