Going out with a Bang?

When they die, most people just get put in a casket lowered into the ground.  Some are buried at sea.  Others are cremated.  Recently, there was news about the option of having your ashes incorporated into a diamond.  That gives new meaning to handing down grandma's diamond from generation to generation!

Tonight, a late ELCA pastor went out with a bang.  Some of Rev. Gordon Bergin's ashes were used as packing material in a shell designed to burst into cross-shaped formations in the sky over Marine on St. Croix, MN.

"All the more power to you, to come up with a creative way to go out," said Christina Morrison, 22, a bartender at Brookside Bar and Grill. "Whatever makes you happy."

Hmmm... well I guess that's creative. As much as I would love to have my own earthly remains placed on a wood raft, grasping a crucifix to my heart, and pushed out from the shore of Lake Michigan. Then a professional archer would shoot a flaming arrow arching out onto the pyre setting it aflame. Something tells me that while that would be creative it doesn't exactly confess the hope which we cling to by faith.
