December 29, 2007 - Saturday in the week of Christmas

Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 55:1-13; Luke 1:1-25

“Your testimonies are very sure; holiness adorns Your house, O Lord, forever” (Psalm 93:5).

How does holiness adorn the Lord's house forever? Only if Christ Himself, our Holiness (Jeremiah 23:6), adorns the Lord's house forever. Does He? His manger, Cross, resurrection, Word, Washing and Supper all tell us that He does. Were these not the Lord's testimonies? The very truths He prophesied to us in Scripture? How true and sure are His testimonies!

Therefore, when tomorrow’s Introit tells you of God, “Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting” (Psalms 93:2), know this: That's not just information telling you something about God. That's the gospel. That's the voice of the Good News telling you that God planned your salvation from the very beginning. That's the assurance from your heavenly Father that He never once left your salvation up to chance, or fate, or luck, or you. No! He planned your salvation from eternity. That's why you were baptized. That's why you will hear the gospel placed into your ears tomorrow. That's why you will kneel at the Lord's Altar to receive His saving Body and Blood. Whereas David could only reign and rule for a time, or shepherd for a while, the One God who sits on his throne reigns and rules forever, and shepherds eternally. And He does that from the Cross!

“The floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea” (Psalm 93:3-4). How troubling the waters of life can be! Troubles at home, at school, at practice, at love, at friendship or wherever else will try to tell you that God Himself has been swamped — that He can no longer care, help, make a difference or save. Such troubling waters!

That's when you turn to the waters of your Baptism. In those waters, God swamped whatever it is you experience in life that makes you feel that He does not care, help, make a difference or save. He does. Your Baptism presents you to Him every day as a child, washed in Christ, clothed in Christ, the object of His energy and concern. Yes, there are some waters that God Himself cannot conquer or deny — the waters of Baptism. Those waters conquer Him, for those waters conquer all your sins and fears.

“Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.” Don't divorce those words from Jesus, as if they were just telling you something about God. Those words are telling you everything about God, for they are telling you everything about Jesus. What God planned, He planned from of old for you. And He accomplished all of that for you in Jesus.
