February 1, 2009 - The Transfiguration of Our Lord

Today's Reading: Matthew 17:1-9

Daily Lectionary: Zechariah 11:4-17; 2 Timothy 4:1-18

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!" (Matthew 17:5)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. When the Father speaks from heaven, He doesn't tell us to look at Jesus. He doesn't tell us to be like Jesus. He doesn't tell us to praise Jesus or to compliment Him. This is the Father's Beloved Son and there is one command: “Hear Him!” Everything that Jesus is about for our salvation is given in our hearing Him. Never mind OUR ideas, OUR thoughts, OUR opinions, OUR ways of thinking. It's “Hear HIM.”

Hear Jesus' words that He is going to Jerusalem to suffer and die and rise on the third day for sinners. Hear Jesus' words that His work is to do the Father's will and that means taking away our sins and raising us up on the Last Day.

Hear Jesus say that He is our righteousness, put upon us in Holy Baptism. Hear Jesus say that it is right for Him to take our sins on Himself and get rid of them. Hear Jesus' words which, added to water, put the Lord's Name on us and mark us as His own.

Hear Jesus absolve sinners. Hear Him tell the weak and the troubled that the Lord has had mercy on them. Hear Jesus speak through your pastor to forgive you all your sins. Hear Jesus cry out from the Cross, imploring the Father's forgiveness upon you.

Hear Jesus feed His sheep. Hear Jesus' words that deliver to us His own body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Hear Jesus' promise that eating His flesh means He lives in you and you in Him and He will raise you up on the Last Day.

All of God's glory that is glimpsed in the bright and shining Jesus is concentrated and summed up in these saving words: “Hear Him!” And what He gives us to hear, His Word, is our life. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

O God, Who in the glorious transfiguration of Your only-begotten Son confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of the fathers and Who, in the voice that came from the bright cloud, did in a wonderful manner foreshow the adoption of sons, mercifully make us co-heirs with the King of His glory and bring us to the enjoyment of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
