Have you ever noticed that it is a heckofa lot easier to stay awake than it is to wake up? Even without the aid of Mountain Dew or a good brew (of coffee ), I can stay awake until very early in the morning if I have to. Waking up in the morning on the other hand . . .
Once I'm actually out of bed and moving around I feel awake and ready for the day. It's the whole 'out of bed' bit that I have trouble accomplishing sometimes. Why???
Well, humans (like most organisms) don't really like to transition from one state to another. We want things to stay the same, because we are comfortable in whatever state we are in. We don't like to change.
It's a lot easier to sit on the couch and watch an infomercial than it is to actually stand up, walk across the room and change the channel. Sometimes we just don't have the energy! An infomercial may be the last thing we want to watch, but the chair is soft, and your feet ache . . . you don't want to move from the comfort of your current state of being!
We get comfortable in our sin, too. Living in sin may be that last thing we want to do, but sometimes we just don't have the energy to be good! It's a lot easier to sleep in Sunday morning than it is to get up, walk across campus and sit through a service . . .
Thanks be to God that we don't have to have the energy! In fact, we are told that, not only do we not have enough energy to "be good", but we are actually DEAD in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1)!
We are sinful, lazy humans living a sinful, lazy world - but we have been saved by God's Grace! "If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you." (Romans 8:10-11)
I am thankful for the gracious gift of coffee to help my mortal body get out of bed in the morning. I am even more thankful that when this mortal body of mine falls asleep for the last time, I will be raised, by something better than coffee (yes, it is possible!), to eternal life with Him in heaven. A life free from sin and sorrow. A life free from infomercials . . .
Do we pass that cross unheeding,
Breathing no repentant vow,
Though we see you wounded, bleeding,
See your thorn encircled brow?
Yet Your sinless death has brought us
Life eternal, peace, and rest;
Only what Your grace has taught us
Calms the sinner's deep distress.
