Perhaps you've seen the WWJD bracelets everyone walks around wearing. Perhaps you're wondering what the big deal is. After all, encouraging people to imitate Christ isnt' bad, right? Actually... these bracelets are very dangerous. They are pure Law and have the nasty tendancy to put all the emphasis on our works. They also operate on the fallacy that we can act as Christ did.
Guess what.
We can't.
And I'm not just talking about dying and rising again. Jesus was perfect. He never did anything wrong and nothing He did was tainted with sin. Even our *good* works are "as filthy rags." When you're a sinner, you sin. That's our nature.
So, what would Jesus do?
Jesus would always do the right thing. What's more important is what He has done and what He continues to do. He died on the cross, atoning for all our sin. Now, He gives us forgiveness through the waters of Baptism and strengthens us with His own Body and Blood. When we fail, He covers us with His righteousness. We are His. Maybe the bracelets should say "I am baptized" instead. That's the greatest comfort possible.
