God in the Parking Lot

Posted At: 2:25pm by Rev. William M. Cwirla
My favorite red-neck philosopher Fred Reed has hit the cultural nail on the head once again, in my less than humble opinion.

Fred opines that the reason Amercan culture seems to be turning against "religion" is that most of its inhabitants live in the small world of hermetically-sealed, climate controlled offices, malls, and gated communities.  He notes, "I suspect that the decline of religion stems less from the advance of scientific knowledge than from the difficulty of discerning the transcendent in a parking lot."

Fred may have a point.  We go from office tower to car to garage to house and rarely, if ever, hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze, much less engage a fellow human being.  The notion that "the heavens declare the glory of God" is largely lost in suburbia, where we can barely see the stars.

I went to that guy's website and blew a few hours reading his stuff. Absolutely spectacular! I split my gut. Even when you don't agree with him, he makes you laugh. I wouldn't mind an evening of hoisting a few with that guy.

Re: God in the Parking Lot

Fred is excellent. Good writer and a lot smarter than he lets on. If you like his columns, you should definitely read his two books:

"Nekkid in Austin: Drop Your Inner Child Down a Well"

"The Great Possum-Squashing and Beer Storm of 1962: Reflections on the Remains of My Country "

You don't have to agree with him to love him.

Re: God in the Parking Lot

No, you don't have to agree with him to appreciate his perspective, but then Jesus can and does use the oddest sorts to get His point across...I love his columns on evolution.

Re: God in the Parking Lot

I will be buying his books. He reminds me of Hunter S. Thompson, except, more intellegent and honest. In a decent democracy, this is the kind of guy who would be elected president.

Re: God in the Parking Lot

I'd vote for him. Sure would make the state of the union speeches a lot more interesting.
