High Plains Songbird

Posted At: 12:34pm by Rev. William M. Cwirla

Blogosphere doesn't ordinarily advertise, but exceptions are warranted once and a while.  I just returned from the high plains of Wyoming at the invitation of Pr. Marcus Zill for the Wyoming District Youth Breakaway Weekend.  It was great fun hanging with the kids, talking "Christo-centricity," and shivering through the Wyoming/CSU "border battle" (Go Cowboys!).

A highlight of the trip was getting to hear Pr. Zill's wife, Bethany, sing.  Unfortunately, she was suffering from a touch of laryngitis, the bane of the chanteuse, but I got a chance to listen to her new CD "Where Roots Run Deep."  All I can say is, "Wow!  This lady can sing up a high plains storm!"

Bethany Zill's musical style is great plains/prairie/cowgirl/country/folk fusion with a touch of blues, boogy and even some yodeling to keep your toes tapping.  She'd be a shoe-in for "A Prairie Home Companion."  Her voice is a pleasant mix of Eva Cassidy and Nancy Griffith with bullseye pitch and killer phrasing that is very easy on the ears.  Her music, some original, some written by others, hearkens to the prairie back porch and warm summer evenings sipping iced tea, catching lightning bugs, and singing simple songs about life, family, and friends.  It makes even a hardened city kid living in the ghetto of suburbia long for the wide open prairie.

Bethany has produced a couple of kids videos, "All About Cowboys for Kids" and "All About John Deere for Kids" for which she also wrote the music.  If you know some kids who love horses, cowboys and garish green farm implements, these would be great gift items.  She's currently working on a video about airplanes.

If the crush of urban life and the shallow soil of generic suburbia has you singing the blues, pick up a copy of "Where Roots Run Deep" and breath some fresh country air.  It'll do your soul some good.

You can buy the CD and videos directly from  Bethany Zill.  Check out her web site.
