Readings, Psalms, and Prayers for the Three Holy Hours
Noon Lamentations 1 / Luke 23:26-34 Psalm 6 Hymn - Jesus, I Will Ponder Now (LSB #440)
O Jesus, as Simon of Cyrene carried your cross upon his back, teach us daily to take up our cross and follow you through all suffering and death. You pardoned those who persecuted you; you absolved those who unjustly nailed you to the tree. Grant us repentance from our sin and teach us rightly to mourn our sinfulness and grieve our death. Grant us perfect pardon, peace, and remission of our sins. As your pardoned people, teach us to forgive those who persecute us, who slander our name, and who unjustly accuse us. Teach us to forgive as we have been forgiven by you. Look down with mercy on all who suffer for your name’s sake. Hear us, holy Jesus.
12:30 Lamentations 2 / Luke 23:35-43 Psalm 22 Hymn - Upon the Cross Extended (LSB #453)
O Jesus, you were mocked and scorned by the rulers and leaders of your people. You were hailed as a king, but only in mockery and derision. You were enthroned, but your throne was the hard wood of a cross. You were counted with the criminals. You were innocent, but for our sakes you became our sin to suffer our punishment. You pardoned the penitent thief and promised him Paradise. Grant us pardon for our offenses and the sure hope of eternal life in your Name. Be our King of Peace and reign over us by your cross and resurrection. Hear us, holy Jesus. Amen
1:00 Lamentations 3 / John 19:23-27 Psalm 51 Hymn - Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted (LSB #451)
O Jesus, you bore the shame of our nakedness upon the tree of the cross as Roman soldiers callously gambled for your clothing. Clothe us, we pray, with the seamless garment of your righteousness, so that our shame might be covered and the dignity of our humanity would be restored. In your time of suffering and sorrow, you honored your mother and provided for her; you acknowledged your beloved disciple and gave him as a son to your mother. Look down upon us, we pray, in our time of grief and loneliness. Bless all who are alone with the comfort of your holy community, the church, and grant us a place in the family of your Father. Make us faithful sons and daughters of our mother, the Church, who birthed us through Baptism into Your death, that we may be heirs of life. Hear us, holy Jesus. Amen
1:30 Lamentations 4 / John 19:28-29 Psalm 62 Hymn - O Dearest Jesus, What Law Hast Thou Broken (LSB #439) Stanzas 1-7
O Jesus, in your thirst you drank the sour wine of our sin. You tasted the bitterness of our death for us, so that we might drink freely of your life and salvation. Grant us to hunger and thirst for your righteousness; refresh us with your holy Word and the blessed Sacrament, and so grant us to take the cup of salvation that you have so lovingly prepared for us. Teach us to look with mercy upon all who thirst, and to give them cool refreshment in your Name. Hear us, holy Jesus. Amen.
2:00 Lamentations 5 / Matthew 27:45-49 Psalm 25 Hymn - O Dearest Jesus, What Law Hast Thou Broken (LSB #439) Stanzas 8-15
O Jesus, you are the Light of the world, and through you light was called out of darkness, yet you hung in darkness for the world's sake. You experienced the God-forsakeness that our rebellion deserves. You were cursed with the curse of the Law against our sin and damned in our place as our Substitute Sacrifice. You faithfully cried out in our abandonment so that we would not be abandoned in the dark hour of our death. Be with us, we pray, and abandon us not in our time of need. Forgive us for the times we have turned our backs to you and to those in need. Grant us to live in your gracious presence forever. Hear us, holy Jesus. Amen.
2:30 Isaiah 42 / John 19:29-30 Psalm 38 Hymn - O Perfect Life of Love (LSB #452)
O Jesus, by your “it is finished,” you declared your work of the world’s redemption complete. You kept the Law perfectly in our place. You received the just punishments of the Law for our sin. You were obedient even to death on a cross. Teach us to trust in your finished work, neither taking anything from it nor adding anything to it. Grant us faith to trust in your good and finished work and not our own, and so free us to do good works of service for our neighbor you have given us to do that we may bear the fruits of your love. Hear us, holy Jesus. Amen
2:45 Isaiah 53 / Luke 23:46-49 Psalm 130 Hymn - Sing, My Tongue the Glorious Battle (LSB #454)
O Jesus, you trusted your Father’s will to the end, and with boldness and confidence you committed your life into His hands. Teach us to trust you with our lives, to daily commit our lives into your Father’s hands, knowing that nothing can separate us from His love in You. Grant us to cling to your Word even when circumstances testify to the contrary. And when we breath our last breath, give us a bold and confident faith in you, that we may die as those declared innocent in Your innocent death.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Gracious Jesus, our Lord and our God, you bore our sin in your own body on the tree so that we, being dead to sin, might live unto righteousness. Have mercy upon us now and at the hour of our death and grant to us, your servants, with all others who devoutly remember your blessed Passion, a holy and peaceful life in this world, a blessed end in faith, and through your grace eternal glory in the life to come, where, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, God forever. Amen
