Wordle This!

Posted At: 10:41pm by Rev. William M. Cwirla
There is a very cool new web toy called Wordle that creates a "word cloud" out of texts, mapping the frequency of word use.  I'm told that the Phoenix Preacher "wordled" one of my sermons and compared it with a sermon of Rick "Purpose-Driven" Warren.  Can you guess which one is mine and which is Warren's?

Just for grins, I "wordled" my sermon for the closing vespers at Amen-St. Louis.  Without giving away the plot to the Amen-Irvine crowd, here's what that sermon looks like in a wordle:

Now I was intrigued.  I dug up a Christmas sermon from 2005 and ran it through the Wordle to see if it would come out "Christmasy" as well as Christ-centered.  Here was the result:

OK, so word choice and frequency alone do not determine how "good" or even how "gospel" a sermon is.  But it certainly makes you think about the words you use.   I can think of all kinds of cool things to do with this toy.  Like, create a wordle and see if you can tell what the Scripture text was.  Try it for yourself and see how your writing looks in a wordle.
