As Hurricane Gustav bears down on the Gulf coast, following the path of Katrina three years ago, theologians are popping up like dandelions on the lawn once again, interpreting this “act of God” to their own advantage. This nonsense used to be the proprietary turf of tele-”evangelist” Pat Robertson, who was known for blaming hurricanes on gays and abortionists. Now Michael Moore (“Sicko”) and former Democratic National Committee chairman Don Fowler have joined the ranks of the theologians, pontificating (joking actually) that Hurricane Gustav is evidence of God’s wrath against the Republicans. See what happens when any idiot becomes a theologian?
Don Fowler was more likely inspired by the spirits in his in-flight bourbon than anything else when he said across the aisle of an airplane, “The timing has it that the hurricane is going to hit on Monday. That just demonstrates that God is on our side.” Oh yeah? Maybe God is ticked off at all the whoopie-making that went on the week before. (HR: http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=164653)
Michael Moore, the master of making money at the misfortune of others, seemed inspired by the sound of the greenhouse gas emanating from his face when he said, “I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven,” Moore said, laughing. “To have it planned at the same time – that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for day one of the Republican Convention, up in the Twin Cities – at the top of the Mississippi River.” Brilliant. (HR: http://www.businessandmedia.org/articles/2008/20080830000004.aspx)
Both seem to think that destruction by hurricane is both theologically significant and amusing.
These are two fine examples of how foolish and futile it is to interpret 1st article disasters apart from a clear Word of God If God is making a political statement, then why does He target the poor people of New Orleans and the Gulf coast again (not to mention that it's a city run by a Democrat)? And how do we know that this isn’t God’s opinion on what went on in Denver the week before at the Democrat's little shindig? If anything, the Republicans stand to look far more like sober and serious adults this week in contrast to their whoopie-making, self-absorbed counterparts on the left of the political spectrum.
All this proves that drunken politicians and quasi-documentary movie makers do not make terribly good theologians. It’s a matter of vocation. Theologians make lousy drunken politicians and quasi-documentary filmmakers in general too.
All we can do in the face of 1st article disaster is repent, as Jesus taught (Luke 13:1ff), recognizing that these signs of God’s wrath are not focused on individuals or political parties but on humanity as a whole and on each of us in particular. They are also the birthing pangs of the new creation, as the old is destined to die and the new to rise in the resurrection of Jesus.
Instead of analyzing the hidden will of God, let us pray for the people of the Gulf coast, especially those in the path of this whirlwind, for the safety of all, for the preservation of life and property, for true repentance in the face of disaster, and for freedom from arrogant idiots who dare to interpret the hidden will of God: Kyrie Eleison

Since you brought up politics... how 'bout we celebrate a good thing?
No matter what you think about the necessity of experience...
No matter what you think about women and men and work and leadership and government...
Still, what a cool thing to see parents who happily chose to allow their child with one too many chromosomes reach birth be broadcast all over national T.V. I don't know what it all means politically, but to see this family that is so personally for life is the best thing of this interminable presidential campaign.

Fowler sobered up and "apologized" for his in-flight theology late today by saying, "There is no political connotation to this whatsoever. This was just poking fun at Jerry Falwell and the nonsensical thing he had said several years ago." Fowler said if anyone was offended, he apologized. Uh huh. You kids will note the great dynamic duo of denial: 1) You misunderstood me; I was joking, really; 2) I'm sorry if anyone was offended.

Yeah, Fowler was just joking.
As I sit in front of my television this morning, watching the waves spill over the levee and threatening the upper ninth ward, I can see what a good sense of humor Fowler has.
It's a laugh-a-minute, I tell ya.
I have a question for you to ponder. Which is the bigger first article disaster----Gustav or Don Fowler?
Perhaps God is punishing America by giving her crappy politicians.
