There is a fine guest article by Rev. Daniel Skillman over at Pr. Petersen's Cyberstones that is well worth the read. Skillman nails a vital distinction: "in Christ" vs "in Adam." This is our double identity as baptized believers. In Adam we are totally sinner; in Christ we are totally saint. Within ourselves, it's a war between the old nature in Adam which serves Sin, and the new nature in Christ, which serves God (see Romans 7). In Adam we are alive to sin and dead to God; in Christ we are alive to God and dead to sin. This is what lies behind Luther's famous simul justus et peccator, our being simultaneously justified and a sinner. In Adam a sinner; in Christ a saint.
