Commemoration of the Faithful Departed

Posted At: 5:20pm by Rev. William M. Cwirla

And I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Write this:  Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on."
"Yes," says the Spirit, "That they may rest from their labors, for their works follow them."  (Revelation 14:13)

O blest communion, fellowship divine,
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine.
Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.
Alleluia!  Alleluia!

Re: Commemoration of the Faithful Departed

Here's some fun stuff by Johann Jacobi (1740-1814). Although this stanza is usually not performed, it is in the complete edition of Franz Schubert's works. The song is Litanei (auf das Fest "Aller Seelen"), translated by Philip Miller. I will be singing this during communion on Sunday.

Alle Geister, die voll Klarheit,
Wurden Martyrer der Wahrheit,
Kampfen fur das Heiligtum,
Suchten nich der Marter ruhm:
Alle, die von hinnen schieden,
Alle Seelen ruhn in Frieden!

(All those serene spirits
Who became martyrs to the truth,
Who fought for the right
Without seeking the glory of martyrdom:
All who have departed,
All souls rest in peace!)
