An Ode to Joseph

Posted At: 10:04am by Rev. William M. Cwirla
An Ode to Joseph
(for faithful fathers)

Joseph - son of David,
Namesake of Father Jacob’s favored son,
Who saved his brothers from starvation;
Carpenter, father surrogate
To God’s Only-begotten,
Y’shua.  Yahweh is salvation.

Joseph - troubled doubter,
Caught between sound reason and God’s Word
“Divorce that girl, so she might wed
The father of her child,” good Reason says.
But the Word replies,
“Fear not to take her as your bride.”

Joseph - humble servant,
Hears the ancient prophet’s voice:
“Behold a virgin will conceive
and bear a son - Immanuel.”
He believes God is truly with us,
And with him.

Joseph - ever faithful,
Husband to a pregnant Virgin,
Goes to Bethlehem to be numbered
With the sons of David,
Where the Promise is delivered
Christ the Lord.

Joseph - restless dreamer,
Heeds the angel’s nocturnal warning
And takes the risky route to Egypt,
Shielding God’s Beloved Chosen
From Herod’s jealous pogrom,
Until His fatefulFriday hour comes.

Joseph - silent hero
Never spoke a Scripture word;
Patron saint of faithful fatherhood
Defender, provider, protector of
The Virgin’s Son, God’s Son,
Savior of the world.

Re: An Ode to Joseph

Pr. Cwirla,
That was awesome! Thanks.

I rejoice knowing the new hymnal will fortunately have a day for him. :)

Oh, one last thing... No verse about his other wife and children? ;-)

As silent as the Scriptures themselves on that one.
