Palm Sunday is always quite the event at our congregation. It's usually sunny, and, being in southern California, we have an ample supply of palms. We hang them on the walls and scatter them along the steps of the church. We gather outside to hear the Palm Sunday Gospel proclaimed over the soccer game next door and the constant flow of traffic. Our processional hymn is always All Glory, Laud, and Honor played by a solo French horn to keep us on pitch and together as we march into church where the tune is picked up by the organ. The progression of sound is quite impressive, anticipating the Easter Vigil where we process into a darkened church chanting "the Light of Christ." The Passion narrative is read in its entirety from the center of the nave. This year, I invited people to stand throughout the lengthy reading. Most did. The sharp contrast of the triumphal entry and the passion narrative is the perfect beginning to Holy Week, during which time we focus on each aspect of our Lord's Passion.
